Design notes: 2 Corinthians 5:7

We live by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7

Thoughts on the verse

This verse can also be translated as "we walk by faith, not by sight" and I really debated whether to use the word "live" or "walk." I ultimately settled on "live" because I felt it was more direct and more encompassing. When I am creating my art, I think about what I need to remind myself of often.

Daily, we must remind ourselves there is more to life than the troubles and chaos around us. We must hold the faith that our God exists and He is ultimately the one in charge and that in the end, He wins. He will create for us a new heaven and a new earth, places that will be perfect and without pain.

Thoughts on the design

While designing this piece another verse from Paul's writings was coming to mind for me. In the book of 1 Corinthians, verse 12, he writes "Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely."

The "then" he is referring to is in the future, when we are with God in heaven and later in the promised restored earth. For now, in our limited physical bodies on this broken earth limit us to mere glimpses of heaven and the spiritual realm. We have to keep our faith believing there is more happening than what we can see with our physical eyes.

The thin strip of watercolor broken with thin lines symbolizes those glimpses of greater truth and beauty. We can't see it all and we can't see it clearly (yet!). I was also visually referencing stained glass and how the light filtering through can create a sense of holiness and peace even though we can't see through it clearly. Additionally, it's placement as a strong vertical line connects us upward towards God.

Thoughts on type

The type is set in Facit, which is my new favorite sans serif font. The modern "stained glass" graphic with its smooth lines and geometric shapes required a similarly smooth and geometric font. I chose to emphasize the word "faith" in both size and through capital letters as that is the core theme.

Thoughts on color

I had fun playing with the watercolor image and shifting its colors to see what else looked good. Darker shades were pulled out for the text and lighter for the background.

I hesitated to offer both "seafoam" and "ocean" since they are both kind of a teal color. However, one veers green (and is proving very popular) and the other blue so they just aren't the same!

I am not usually a big fan of yellows but lately I have been loving the slightly warmer and darker shade of mustard yellow. I have been noticing it everywhere! The mustard just might be my favorite shade for this piece.
